Voon Lee Shan press statement

Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) strongly condemns the recent conduct of an UMNO leader who made a vulgar and deeply disrespectful joke involving the Holy Bible during a solemn assembly. Let there be no ambiguity: this was not merely an insult to the Catholic Bible. The Bible is the Holy Book of Christians across all denominations. Any act, statement, or joke that desecrates, mocks, or treats the Holy Bible with contempt is deeply offensive to the entire Christian community.

Faith Is Not a Subject for Political Theatrics

Religious faith must never be degraded into material for crude humor or political point-scoring.

The Holy Bible is sacred to millions of Christians across Malaysia, including the vast Christian population of Sarawak. Any political leader—especially one holding public office or exercising political influence—must understand that words and actions touching on religion carry profound real-world consequences.

"What happened reflects a disturbing level of insensitivity and recklessness in Malaysian politics. Differences in religion must never become an excuse for ridicule, provocation, or humiliation."

Political leaders carry a fundamental responsibility to protect mutual respect and social harmony, not actively undermine them.

Sarawak’s Harmony Will Not Be Compromised

Sarawak has long stood as a beacon of genuine interfaith harmony. For generations, Sarawakians of diverse races and religions have lived side by side, shared meals, celebrated one another's festivals, and respected each other’s sacred traditions.

Our religious diversity is not a vulnerability—it is one of Sarawak's greatest strengths.

We will not tolerate or accept the importation of divisive, racially charged, and religiously insensitive politics that threatens the peaceful fabric of our society.

Demand for Full Public Accountability

Parti Bumi Kenyalang demands that the UMNO leadership formally and publicly apologize to Christians throughout Malaysia, particularly to the Christian community in Sarawak, for this disgraceful conduct.

  • No Excuses: This matter cannot be brushed aside or dismissed as a simple "misunderstanding."

  • Sincere Apology Required: When a sacred religious text is made the butt of a vulgar joke, the only acceptable response is clear accountability and a sincere apology.

  • Leadership Standard: Those who seek public office must recognize that respect for all faiths is not optional—it is a non-negotiable prerequisite for leading a multireligious nation.

Standing Together for Mutual Respect

Sarawak belongs to all Sarawakians—Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, and followers of all other faiths. We must stand firmly together to defend the mutual respect, religious freedom, and unity that generations before us have carefully built.

Enough is enough. Religion must never be made the target of political jokes and provocation.
